Message from Executive Director Charlie Arms

​Winter is a good time for me to take advantage of continuing education opportunities. While the US Sailing National Symposium is not new to me (going on 18 years of attendance) this year’s theme was one of Diversity and Inclusion. These topics especially resonated with what we do at Brendan Sailing. With record breaking attendance, I was able to network with many sailing organizations. Our focus on youth with Learning Differences is unique in the industry. Our development of the Brendan Approach Instructor Training can help fill the need for many organizations who serve this population.

I also attended the Learning Disabilities of America (LDA) Association’s annual conference. While this was a larger attendance, nearly 800 people, I found myself part of a small group of organizations who run summer programs that specialize in serving LD youth. Here, I was able to attend breakout sessions and network with other summer programs. Through this collaboration, I was able to further develop our camp assessment tools. Using these new various methods will help measure the impact our program has on our participants. We are also actively looking for staff for this summer. We need Sailing Instructors, Assistant Instructors and Camp Counselors.
