Brendan Sailing has received a $10,000 Grant from The Brick Companies Foundation. This grant will support expanding opportunities to youth who would otherwise not have these life experiences.
Shelly Ford, Chief Responsibility Officer of the Brick Companies, states “As we navigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and what the world may look like on the other side, the need for life experiences has never been greater. The Brick Companies is both proud and honored to support the programs and initiatives of Brendan Sailing. Children who would otherwise never have these opportunities leave each program with increased self-confidence and greatly-improved social skills. Visit the photo gallery and look at those smiles!” Charlie Arms, Executive Director of Brendan Sailing, expressed “We are so grateful to TBC Foundation for their on-going support of Brendan Sailing. This generous gift will enable us to continue creating successes for youth with Learning Differences in our program at DC Sail and in our summer camps”. The Brendan Corporation, parent organization of Brendan Sailing, founded in 1985, is dedicated to building pathways for self-confidence and personal growth in children with Learning Differences through individually tailored experiential instruction in sailing. For more information, please visit www.brendansailing.org The Brick Companies were founded in 1892. For over 125 years TBC has owned and managed commercial, residential, and recreational properties throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and is focused on creating memorable places for current and future generations through social responsibility and environmental leadership. While this year we would have ideally hosted our sailing camps in person on the water in Annapolis, St. Mary's, and Washington DC, we had to postpone our camps due to the ongoing health crisis. We were fortunate enough to convert our curriculum into virtual camp sessions which we dubbed, 'Brendan Out of-the-the Box' and thanks to the Kathy and Jerry Wood Foundation, we were able to host four of these sessions this past July to any student ages 11-18 free of charge. Needless to say - we had a blast! We met online with returning campers and new students, who received materials in the mail to build their own boats, practice course navigation, study sail positions, and much more. Below are video recaps of each session for any students or parents interested - feel free to reach out with any feedback or requests to attend future sessions. We hope to continue in making a difference through our mission! June 30, 2020 – Washington, D.C. – The Brendan Sailing Program for Youth with Learning Differences (Brendan Sailing) has moved online! Starting Friday, July 10, Brendan Sailing will be hosting 'Brendan-Out-of-the-Box'; a free, four-week interactive Zoom series focused on sailing skills. Hosted by Brendan Sailing staff, the digital interactive series is tailored for hands-on learning and aims to provide participants a fun and unique social environment focused on sailing. "At Brendan, we rely on hands-on learning using manipulatives to teach sailing concepts. How do we do that virtually? By sending a box of materials directly to the camper and making the teaching tools or manipulatives with them." Said Charlie Arms, Executive Director. Sessions and dates include: Session 1: Friday, July 10, 2020 "Build-a-Boat" – Participants will be provided a small wooden boat to assemble while learning about its parts and functions! Session 2: Friday, July 17, 2020 "What Floats?" – Participants will be provided a small bucket for water and clay to form a 'boat' to test buoyancy and learn why some boats float…and others don't! Instructor Evan will be joining live from a 40' sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay. Session 3: Friday, July 24, 2020 "Where the Wind Blows" – Participants will build their own "wind pizza" to learn the points of sail. Campers will then use their boats from Session 1 to practice setting the sails to the wind. Session 4: Friday, July 31, 2020"Aids to Navigation" – Participants will construct mini navigational aids and use them to mark a hazardous channel on a navigational chart to provide safe passage of their "boat." All four sessions are free to join, and all materials needed will be provided and mailed prior to each registered lesson. Session applications are now available online and can be found on Brendan Sailing's website: www.brendansailing.org. Prior registration is required. Ages 11-18 are welcome to participate.
