Executive Director/LEAD Instructor
Charlie Arms joined Brendan Sailing in January 2017 to hep update the curriculum. She is a US Sailing Small Sailing Instructor Trainer and has served on the National Faculty for Small Boat, Keelboat and Powerboat. She started teaching sailing just after learning to sail as part of the Navy Sailing Program in San Diego at the age of 10 years old. While getting a degree in Recreation from Cal State Long Beach, she was the Director of the Leeway Sailing Center. In 1999 she joined the faculty of the California Maritime Academy as the Director of Sailing. In addition to coaching the collegiate sailing team and overseeing the recreational sailing program, she received her Master's Degree in Recreation, Parks and Tourism from San Francisco State University. Charlie retired from the California State University after 16 years and moved to Annapolis. When not teaching sailing and running educational programs, Charlie is an International Umpire and served on the 2013 America's Cup Umpire team. She also enjoys racing having actively raced on the Women's Match Racing circuit and sailing with the St. Francis Yacht Club Grand Master Team Racing Team. She serves on the US Sailing Umpire Committee and is the Chair of the Education Division.
Assistant Sailing Director
Dillon Kelley first joined Brendan Sailing in July of 2009 as camp participant. Here, he learned to sail with no prior experience, and in the years since his passion for sailing has only increased. Through his time as a camper, Dillon was able meet new friends and experience great success as sailor. Due to his success and positive attitude, in 2013 after 3 years as a camper, he was invited back by the Brendan Staff to be an Assistant Instructor. As Assistant Instructor, Dillon was able to use his unique insight as a former camper to relate to current campers, and assist the other instructors with the daily curriculum of the camp. He would stay in this role until the 2016 season where was offered the role of Instructor and now the role of Sailing Assistant Director. He possesses a US Sailing Small Boat Certification, and was honored as the 2016 Molly Mahoney Award winner at the annual Brendan Awards Brunch. He is excited for his new role, and eager to work again with the participants of the 2017 Brendan Sail Training Program!
Evan McCarthy has been involved with Brendan for 9 years. Starting as a camper, he quickly fell in love with being on the water and participating in Brendan Sailing. In 2017 he starts his first summer as an official instructor. He earned his US Sailing Small Boat Instructor certification in right here in Annapolis. Evan has sailed 5 seasons for Broadneck High School’s Varsity and JV sailing team based out of Severn Sailing Association.Through Brendan, Evan has received the "No Guts No Glory" award for the Annapolis day camp in 2013. Evan is excited to have the opportunity to work for Brendan and those who bound him with a love for sailing. From a shy first year day camper, to a full instructor, Evan is ready to share his love for the sport with today's campers.
